Hyacinth is torn away from her daily duties when she learns that Daddy has escaped from home to the toy store, where he has run up a bill that he cannot pay.

Synopsis The Toy Store ()

Hyacinth is knocking on Richards bathroom door and asking him to not make so much noise in the bathroom. Daisy wants to know the definition of limpid as in he gazed into her limpid eyes. Hyacinth is meeting with a life insurance salesman. She tells the salesman she must check the policy with her son Sheridan. Richard is at his office going over printouts, and Hyacinth calls on the phone. Elizabeth arrives for a visit to ask if Hyacinth needs anything from town. Richards boss comes into his office and mentions Early Retirement, and Richard goes into a trance. Richard obviously does not want to retire because then he will be at home with Hyacinth all day every day. Rose comes into see Daisy and Onslow and announces, Daddys gone off! She warns them that he may get up to mischief, and Hyacinth may find out. Meanwhile, Richard is still in his trance, and his boss comes into the room and wakes him up. Richard discovers Hyacinth has hung up the phone on her end of the line. Elizabeth and Emmet cannot get the car started. Hyacinth comes out and wonders if they are having trouble, and then she insults them by saying the car is old. Hyacinth invites them in to call the garage. In the living room, Hyacinth is showing old Sheridan toys to Elizabeth and Emmet, zooming toy airplanes around. Violet calls on the phone. Violets Bruce is opening new offices and may become President of the local Association, and he is also having an affair. Bruce is also currently dressed as a jockey and riding about on a horse named Thunderbolt. Onslow and Daisy and Rose pull up in front of Hyacinths house. Hyacinth is horrified to find them at the front door and she rushes Emmet and Elizabeth out the back door. Then she drags the others into the house. She makes them remove their shoes and places them on the front stoop. Emmet and Elizabeth look on this with puzzled curiosity. Rose insists Daisy tell Hyacinth about Daddy. Daisy tells her Daddy has sneaked out and did a little shopping. The store phoned and said Daddy has spent 235 quid in the toy department of a local department store. Daisy says they cannot afford to buy the toys and she wants Hyacinths help. Hyacinth phones Richard to come home and bring his check book. Onslow offers to give Emmet and Elizabeth a ride to town. Rose gets in the back seat and sits on Emmets lap. In a huge puff of smoke, they head for town. At the store, Richard is out front when he sees Daddy come out dressed as a Spaceman. Store personnel come rushing out looking for Daddy. Rose is cuddled up to Emmet during the drive, and Emmet has a nice lascivious grin on his face. Emmet and Elizabeth are dropped off. Hyacinth sees Councilwoman Nugent and she gets out of the car, trying to keep Mrs. Nugent from seeing her. She sneaks through a taxi and goes up to the Councilwoman, and Mrs. Nugent wants to know why she is wasting money on a taxi. They go into the store, but Hyacinth spies Daddy in the store, and she rushes Councilwoman Nugent out of the store. Bruce comes down the sidewalk dressed as a cowboy riding a fake pony. Hyacinth puts dark glasses on Mrs. Nugent, and then she begins creeping around the store. Meanwhile, Richard is dealing with Daddy and the Store Personnel. Hyacinth goes up to the Department Supervisor, and they get Daddy, and head out the door. Suddenly, Daddy comes rushing out the door chasing a woman and she screams. Onslow pulls up in the car, Richard stuffs him into the back seat of the car and they drive away. Richard and Hyacinth walk arm in arm down the street, talking about Daddy and how brilliant he used to be. Suddenly, Bruce comes around the corner on his fake horse and Hyacinth makes Richard turn around and they stride off in the opposite direction.
